In our presentation this week we will be discussing the tension between AI and human creators in copyright, with a specific focus on music. We will examine how some early experiments with novel approaches to music are a precursor to current AI approaches to music creation. As part of our discussion, we will also consider the unique complications that AI brings to the concept of copyright ownership and authorship of AI-created or AI-assisted works by looking at Canada’s current position, as well as approaches being used or considered in other jurisdictions. The final aspect of our presentation will evaluate how an artist’s personality and moral rights in their works are engaged when an AI mimics or otherwise uses their works.
