Interesting dissertation of traditional Indigenous knowledge and its intersections with IP law

Hello fellow classmates!

The author of this dissertation, Greg Young-ing, was a professor of mine during my early undergrad years at UBCO (admittedly those were quite a few years ago now..). As a non-Indigenous person who was taught from a highly euro-centric perspective for much of my educational life, Greg’s Indigenous Studies class had a massive impact on me. Taking his class expanded my view of the world exponentially.

Hearing Professor Meredith’s story last class about the leggings in the mall reminded me of him and the work he did relating to traditional knowledge of Indigenous people and it’s intersection with IP law. He often talked about it and I remember how passionate he was about it. I actually managed to track down his dissertation and am attaching it here for your perusal. I think the most directly relevant parts to this course would probably be pg. 42 – 56, 62 – 63 and 56 – 62.

Sadly, Greg passed away in 2019, but luckily, his work remains with us as a way to remember him. I hope you enjoy reading it!

Sincerely,

Kaja
